Maven has completed an investment in Crafter’s Companion, the County Durham-based craft supplies business founded by entrepreneur and TV personality Sara Davies MBE.

The transaction sees Maven invest via two of its regional growth funds, NPIF II Maven Equity Finance, part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II, and the Finance Durham Fund, established by Durham County Council and overseen by Business Durham. The funding will be used to improve operational efficiency and drive sales growth across both UK and international markets.

Founded in 2005 while Davies was at university, Crafter’s Companion has grown into a well-known brand among crafting enthusiasts, offering a broad range of creative tools and materials.

The business entered administration earlier this year and was acquired in a pre-pack transaction by Modella Capital. Since then, Davies returned as interim CEO to lead a successful turnaround, restoring profitability and refocusing the business on its core strengths. The company employs over 100 staff and is led by an all-female management team.

As part of this transaction, Modella has exited, while Davies has increased her minority shareholding and will remain closely involved in the strategic direction of the company.

The UK craft market, valued at £3.1 billion in 2023, is forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 5.7%, reaching £4.4 billion by 2030. Crafter’s Companion is well placed to benefit from this trend, supported by a loyal customer base and a reputation for high-quality, innovative products.

A new US warehouse is also being launched to support the company’s growing international sales and to mitigate the impact of recent changes to US import rules, which have increased tariffs on low-value goods from overseas.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the team at Maven. Their values, local focus, and commitment to building strong, long-term businesses make them the perfect partners for the next stage of our journey.”

Diane Sharp, who has played a key role in the turnaround, has been appointed Managing Director and will lead the business through its next phase. Davies will continue as a key shareholder and brand ambassador.

This investment demonstrates Maven’s commitment to backing ambitious regional businesses with strong leadership and clear commercial potential. Through both NPIF II and the Finance Durham Fund, Maven continues to support companies across the North East with the capital and expertise required to accelerate growth.
